ITS Recommendation for Internet Explorer 8
In response to Microsoft's recent release of the new Internet Explorer 8 (IE 8) web browser, Information Technology Services recommends that you do not install it at this time. Web applications such as Oracle and Banner have not yet been verified to be compatible with this new version of IE.

Microsoft Throttling Messages From BU
Since mid-morning Tues., Sept. 9, Microsoft has been throttling messages it receives from BU. The domains subject to throttling are hotmail.com, msn.com, and live.com. The result of this throttling is that very little mail is being transfered from BU to the any of these domains.

MS Windows and MS Office for Fall 2008
ITS is announcing the plans for Microsoft Windows environment support beginning Fall semester, 2008. We are also announcing deployment plans for MS Office 2007 for Windows and MS Office 2008 for Macintoshes. Operating System: ITS recommends that campus users remain with Windows XP Professional. While Windows Vista will be supported for those who need it, XP Professional works with Oracle, Banner and Blackboard. Vista has issues with all three of these strategic products.

Computer Pods and Classrooms Continue to use Microsoft Windows XP
The Computer Pods and Information Commons across campus will continue to use the Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system. This includes the University Downtown Center and all Multimedia classrooms with installed Windows computers.

Microsoft Windows in Pods and Multimedia Classrooms
Even though ITS now supports Microsoft Windows Vista on personal and office computers, we do not intend to convert all public labs and classroom computers to this operating system. ITS will continue to use Windows XP Professional in Pod Classrooms, multimedia classrooms, Information Commons and other public labs for all of fall semester, 2007.

Windows Vista Update from ITS
Information Technology Services will provide support for the Windows Vista operating system beginning Wednesday, Aug. 1. ITS will support the Vista Business edition on faculty/staff machines.

Computer Virus Outbreak on Campus
Recently, several computers on campus have been compromised due to a variant of a known virus. In all cases, these machines have not had the appropriate Windows updates applied to them and were vulnerable.

Microsoft recently released a security update for "Microsoft Office for Mac."

Sharing and Moving Files with Word 2007
The new Microsoft Word 2007 brings with it the introduction a new file format (*.docm). Currently, this format is not automatically supported or recognized by older versions of Microsoft Word or other word processing programs. There are several options for users sharing files between Word 2007 and older versions of Word.

Exchange Server Migration to Take Place Over Holiday Break
ITS will be migrating Exchange users to a new Exchange server during the December holiday break. The migration is expected to take 1-3 days. The Exchange server will be unavailable from Dec. 29 through Dec. 31. Users should not attempt to log into their mailboxes during this time as it could cause issues with the migration process. The migration is expected to be completed by Jen. 1, 2007 at 8:00 AM.
