Now is the time that faculty make text book selections and begin thinking about their fall semester courses. Now is also the time for ITS to plan changes in the Pod classrooms and open computing labs that will take effect in fall semester. This Bytes ‘n Bites session is an opportunity to discuss planned changes so that we avoid nasty surprises at the beginning of the semester.

Faculty and graduate students have careers invested in research data. It's not uncommon for faculty or graduate students to lose important data or documents (e.g., dissertation files) due to equipment problems or attacks from outside. Information Technology Services (ITS) has assisted many users in these situations. ITS has infrastructure in place to reduce risk in these situations. We have best practices that we promote for data storage and backup. We also promote best practices that protect your lab and personal computers from outside attackers via virus or other malware.

Bytes 'n Bites Forum Dec. 3: bingvmb/bingmvs Retirement Party

On January 15, 2009, the IBM mainframe computer that was the workhorse of our administrative systems and many large scale research applications will be removed from service. After this, data stored on magnetic tapes or cartridges, in MVS disk files, or in VM/CMS files will be inaccessible. If you have data in any of these formats that you want to save, you should attend this session. Please contact ITS immediately for assistance on preserving the information. After January 15, the data will be irretrievable.

Students sometimes complain that it takes a very long time to print some materials published in Blackboard courses. PowerPoint slide presentations and pdf documents can sometimes become HUGE files when sent to printers.
