Bytes 'n Bites is a casual forum for discussion of technology issues for the Binghamton University community. Bring your lunch, your questions, your comments.
Faculty and graduate students have careers invested in research data. It's not uncommon for faculty or graduate students to lose important data or documents (e.g., dissertation files) due to equipment problems or attacks from outside. Information Technology Services (ITS) has assisted many users in these situations. ITS has infrastructure in place to reduce risk in these situations. We have best practices that we promote for data storage and backup. We also promote best practices that protect your lab and personal computers from outside attackers via virus or other malware.

The new Internet2 Network (www.internet2.edu/network), now with 100 Gbps capacity, provides a tenfold increase in bandwidth over Internet2’s first generation "Abilene" network. The Internet2 Network is designed to provide point-to-point dynamic and static circuit services and advanced IP services that will support innovation in network-intensive scientific frontiers including: High Energy and Nuclear Physics, Earthquake Engineering Simulation, Environmental Observatories, and eVLBI.

StatMart Upgrades Made
"Cruncher", a two-cpu, dual-core Sun Fire V490 Server has recently replaced StatMart as an ITS "high performance computing" platform for research and statistical computing. This machine will provide users with a number of improved capabilities on the older machine.
