New Xerox Phaser™ 4510 printers have been added to some of the public computing areas and are available through the Pharos Uniprint® printing systems. The new printers are located in the following areas:

Blackboard Version 9 Upgrade Announced
The Blackboard Support Team announces the upgrade of Blackboard to Version 9. The upgrade will take place on August 17th and 18th. The new release features “social learning” tools, such as blogs and journals, enhanced notification capabilities and a redesigned, customizable user interface. Documentation and videos will be posted on the UCTD website (http://training.binghamton.edu). Also check the UCTD calendar for upcoming Blackboard 9 preview workshops.

BU to move to Google Apps Education Edition
On May 6, 2009, the Academic Computing and Educational Technology (ACET) committee approved the recommendation to move our Mirapoint email service to Google Apps Education Edition. Google Apps Education Edition provides a hosted suite of communication and collaboration tools to higher education institutions for free.

Oracle HR and Finance Applications Update
Information Technology Services is moving Oracle HR and Finance applications from J-initiator to JRE on Sunday night, June 14, 2009 to maintain a supported configuration for the Oracle E-Business Suite. It is imperative that you read and follow the instructions for downloading and installing JRE on your computer to use Oracle after the update. A link to step-by-step instructions will be posted near the IPROD link on the BU Applications Team Portal page. Please direct any questions or issues to the ITS Help Desk at 7-6420.

ITS Recommendation for Internet Explorer 8
In response to Microsoft's recent release of the new Internet Explorer 8 (IE 8) web browser, Information Technology Services recommends that you do not install it at this time. Web applications such as Oracle and Banner have not yet been verified to be compatible with this new version of IE.

Reminder: Beware of Phishing Scams
Users continue to receive phishing scams and are reminded not to respond. These scams appeared to come from legitimate campus sources, and asked recipients to reply to the messages with personal information such as their email address, email password and date of birth. The University community needs to be reminded that legitimate businesses and government entities are aware of phishing scams and would not ask you to send sensitive information in response to unsolicited email. You should treat these messages like spam and never reply to them.

IBM Mainframe to Be Retired This Month
ITS will be retiring the IBM Mainframe this month, January 2009.
The retirement scheduled is:
- Friday, January 9: MVS (CICS and the administrative applications that run in this environment) will be unavailable from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
- Thursday, January 15: the mainframe (MVS and VM/CMS) will be removed from service permanently at 5:00 pm.
