Exchange Server Migration to Take Place Over Holiday Break

ITS will be migrating Exchange users to a new Exchange server during the December holiday break. The migration is expected to take 1-3 days. The Exchange server will be unavailable from Dec. 29 through Dec. 31. Users should not attempt to log into their mailboxes during this time as it could cause issues with the migration process. The migration is expected to be completed by Jen. 1, 2007 at 8:00 AM.

While this process should be transparent to all users, please take note of the following information:

  • The new Exchange server is named exchn01 and its IP address is 128.226.6.224
  • Outlook Web Access (Exchange web mail) will change to http://bux2k.binghamton.edu/exchange and now includes 99% of the look and feel of the full Outlook client. (ITS is encouraging anyone using Exchange from off-campus to consider using Outlook Web Access instead of the Outlook client as it requires no VPN software and no client loaded on the remote machine.
  • POP and IMAP services will be available at bux2k.binghamton.edu as before.
  • Windows Mobile Active Sync and Always Up To Date services will be available to anyone using a handheld device/Smartphone running Windows Mobile 5 or equivalent.
  • Should you encounter problems with the Outlook client, you should first attempt to use the Outlook Web Access web mail system by pointing your browser to http://bux2k.binghamton.edu/exchange. (You do not need to launch the Cisco VPN software to use Outlook Web Access.)

You will be prompted to enter your network login credentials and password. Enter your network user ID as shown above. You must have the domain preceding your user ID (BGM, WTSN, DECKER, FND) according to the domain that you are in. Once that page launches you will have full access to all of your mail, calendar items, contacts, etc just as in Outlook.

If you prefer to use the Outlook client and cannot connect after 8:00 AM on Jan. 1 2007, you can follow the instructions below to re-home Outlook to the new server. (Be sure you have successfully launched the Cisco VPN client and logged in before continuing.) Outlook should not be running at this time.

  • In Windows, click Start, then Control Panel, then Mail
  • Click on the tab labeled E-mail Accounts
  • Double click on Microsoft Exchange Server
  • In the box labeled Microsoft Exchange Server, change the name to exchn01 or you may enter the IP address of the server as 128.226.6.224
  • Click next and then OK or Close until you're back at the desktop.
  • Launch Outlook and you should now be connected to the new server.
  • If you have any other issues, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 777-6420
