Connecting from Offices

At Binghamton University, Internet connections are available from most offices on campus. Faculty and staff who need help in connecting to the network from their office should contact the Help Desk.

Hardware

Most new computers are capable of connecting to the University network through Ethernet. We support Ethernet under Windows with a 3Com/10 Base-T card, and Mac OS with either a built-in Ethernet, a Farallon Ethermac transceiver, or a Farallon Ethermac card. If you are purchasing new equipment for your office and are uncertain about what to buy, contact the Help Desk and ask for assistance from the Networking Support group. Binghamton University also has a lease program in place to assist its departments in acquiring and maintaining an up-to-date level of computer equipment.

Software

Computing Services provides software and documentation to set up your computer for connecting to the Internet. The Binghamton University Internet Connection Kit (B.U.I.C.K.) for Windows and Internet Suite for Macintosh software are available on CD-ROM and can be picked up at the Help Desk. If you call the Help Desk and ask for help in connecting to the network, someone from Networking Support usually will install the necessary software for you.

University Policies

All users must abide by the Binghamton University Computer and Network Usage Policy. Violators of this policy may be subject to immediate suspension of services by Computing Services and to existing student or employee disciplinary procedures of the University. Illegal acts involving the University's computing resources may also subject users to subpoena and prosecution by commercial enterprises, local, state and/or federal authorities. As such, users are expected to read and understand these policies.

Upgrades

Once you've set up your connection and software, there should be no reason to reinstall your communications software. To upgrade individual programs online, browse the software vendor's site or check the Binghamton University FTP site.
