Connecting from Off Campus

Computing Services offers dial-in connections by modem at speeds up to 56Kbs. At Binghamton University, there are currently 72 modem lines available for connecting to the campus by telephone 24 hours a day. 

Hardware

You will need a computer running Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP or MacOS (System 8.5 or higher). In addition, a modem that can operate at a minimum speed of 14,400 bits per second (bps) is recommended. 

Software

Computing Services provides software and documentation to set up your computer for connecting to the Internet. B.U.I.C.K. (for Windows) and the Internet Suite for Macintosh are available on CD and can be picked up at the Help Desk

Modems

Communications Settings

  • Data up to 56Kbs, v.32bis, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity
  • Use "ANSI" or VT100 (or higher) terminal emulation

Dial-Up Numbers

  • Numbers: 251-1100 and 251-1200
  • Time Limit: 2 hours
  • Speed: 56Kbs

Computer and Network Usage Policy

Faculty, staff, students, and any other authorized users who have computer accounts at Binghamton University are expected to abide by the Binghamton University Computer and Network Usage Policy.

Upgrades

Once you've set up your connection and software, there should be no reason to reinstall your communications software. To upgrade individual programs online, browse the software vendor's site or check the Binghamton University FTP site

Internet Service Providers (ISP)

Persons who decide for one reason or another to use a commercial ISP instead of the University's connection software and modems may want to look at the information provided by these sites:

RoadRunner

Binghamton University and Time Warner Cable of Binghamton are offering RoadRunner service at a significant discount to Binghamton University Faculty and Staff including Adjunct Faculty and Teaching Assistants. Details of this service are available on the Binghamton University Telecommunications web site.

RoadRunner subscribers may want some software which is on the BUICK CD such as ssh, anti-virus software and VPN (for access to certain library resources and ftp). The BUICK CD is available at the HelpDesk.
