[1]"The Knowledge Navigator"; by Apple Computer, Inc., Transforming Higher Education by Dolence and Norris, books by Greg Bear and others have contributed to this vision of the future.

[2]This "vision" section is nicely complemented by work done in 1995 by Binghamton University's Faculty Senate Computer Advisory Committee (Richard Baskerville, Chair), in the report entitled "Information Technology Goals and Strategies" (4/95). The report is reproduced in Appendix A.

[3]Throughout the rest of this document, the term "PC" is generally used to indicate a personal machine whether a Windows platform, Macintosh, or Unix workstation.

[4]"Distance Learning" is a term we should use with care. It makes the distinction, important today, that the learner and teacher are distant from one another. Long-term, however, our concern will be to deliver ever-better technologically-mediated learning, and the distance between learner and teacher may become unimportant.

[5]Alumni, Classroom Scheduling, Degree Audit, Library, Undergraduate Financial Aid are purchased systems; all others have been developed in-house.
