Email Aliases

What is an Email Alias?

An email alias is another way of giving out your existing Binghamton University email address. Unlike your UserID (bf12345 or jsuny1), your alias uses your full name, separated by a period, so if your current address is jsuny1@binghamton.edu, you'll have an alias like josephine.suny@binghamton.edu.

Do I Need A New Password?

No, regardless of whether you use your regular email UserID, or an alias, your mail will wind up in your regular Binghamton account.

Can I Use My Alias For Everything?

The alias is a great way to share your email address with others, but you'll still need to use your email UserID (jsuny1, bf12345) to log in to retrieve your mail, to access the University network using a modem, and for Blackboard, libraries and other services. Think of your alias as the public face of your email account, and your UserID as your key to Binghamton University services.

Can I Create My Own Alias?

Yes, the alias panel in BUSI allows you to create a custom "secondary" alias. Remember, you'll only have one opportunity to set this alias, so choose carefully. Computing Services reserves the right to deny aliases deemed inappropriate.

How Do I Get My Alias?

Alias Screen

  • UserID: This is the name you use (with your password) to access your email, and to login to Blackboard and other services. When "@binghamton.edu" is added (ex: jsuny1@binghamton.edu) this is also your default email address.
  • Primary Alias: Your primary alias uses your full name, separated by a period, so if your email address is jsuny1@binghamton.edu, you'll have a primary alias like josephine.suny@binghamton.edu. In cases where more than one person on campus shares the same name, the primary alias may vary somewhat from this example.
  • Secondary Alias: Initially, there will be no secondary alias assigned. You can request a secondary alias using the on-screen form.
